Christiform
Queeni Grace
Christiform begins with God. With the belief that creativity is not simply something we manufacture, but something we receive. Inspiration entrusted to the artist and translated through sound. For QUEENI GRACE, music is where the divine, the deeply personal and the creative meet.
Rooted in jazz and shaped by the wider Black diasporic musical experience, the album moves through blues, contemporary and improvisational jazz, gospel, soul and R&B. Honouring the African American progenitors of jazz, QUEENI GRACE brings her African, Caribbean and British cultural inheritance into conversation with the form. African rhythmic influences, diasporic musical traditions and contemporary jazz converge within an eclectic sound that moves across continents, cultures and generations.
At its heart, Christiform is deeply personal. The songs draw from lived experience: love and loss, favour and disappointment, rupture and recovery, resilience, faith and belonging. Christianity is the spiritual lens through which these experiences have been lived, questioned, understood and transformed into music.
The title Christiform comes from Christiformity: the continuing process of a life being formed in the likeness of Christ. That journey is expressed through two distinct but interconnected acts of reclamation. The first is spiritual: the reclamation of true identity in Jesus Christ. The second is cultural: a reconnection with an Igbo Nigerian heritage from which QUEENI GRACE had been disconnected. Her identity remains rooted in Christ, while her African, Caribbean and British cultural inheritance becomes something to recover, understand and express.
Rather than preaching that process, Christiform bears witness to it. Scripture and theology meet memory, testimony, cultural inheritance and lived experience, carried through intimate vocals, African rhythmic influences, improvisation, space and the expressive freedom of jazz.
Christiform is a devotional exploration through jazz. Unmistakably Christian in its source, African, Caribbean and British in its cultural inheritance, and open in its invitation to anyone willing to listen.
